Save the whales

Ship strikes are a leading cause of death and injuries for whales migrating along the West Coast. The only oceangoing entities that rival them in size, commercial ships can kill these majestic animals in an instant as they hurtle through whale habitat.

Take action to protect humpback, fin, blue and gray whales from fatal collisions.

Right now the Coast Guard is setting routes for ships to West Coast ports. To reduce ship strikes with whales, proposed routes go south of the Channel Islands and outside much of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. This is a step in the right direction, but it’s not enough.

The Coast Guard must go further by establishing shipping routes that avoid biologically important areas for whales. It also must consider measures to minimize impacts in critical habitat for whales and all national marine sanctuaries, including slowing vessels to 10 knots when and where whales are likely present.

Studies show that slowing down ships can dramatically reduce fatal whale collisions and rerouting them can reduce harmful noise.

Safe waters are needed now. Recently Fran, a well-known and beloved humpback, washed ashore in the San Francisco Bay Area with injuries from a ship strike.

Sign this petition to tell the Coast Guard to do more to fight the deadly impacts of shipping traffic on whales.

Save Frost the Polar Bear on Svalbard

Frost (aka Micha) is a female polar bear whose territory is on Svalbard in Norway.

Frost is a super mother who raises very intelligent cubs who are strong, fast and healthy. These cubs will likely contribute to a future population of healthy adult polar bears.

Unfortunately Frost and her cubs are extremely resourceful and are getting into cabins with food supplies and have also had encounters with people as she is un afraid.

The problem is that the leader of the local council in Longyearbyen suggested to kill Frost for getting into the cabins where food is stored. She has been teaching her cubs to do the same. Remains of reindeers left behind from hunters can also attract her to these areas. A hungry polar bear has only one choice, one goal, to search for food. If we leave food there, they will come.

She has been filmed for 9 years by a talented and dedicated film maker, Asgeir Helgestad. He has made a beautiful film called Queen Without Land. It is incredible, sharing details about her life on Svalbard. She is also known as Micha by other brilliant filmmakers who produced the Disney film this year. She is famous.

Please sign the petition to save Frost for the obvious reason that humans are the problem and not the polar bears. We are expecting these bears to not interfere with cabins where food is located, in the Arctic, which is their territory.

If we don’t do something now to stop these decisions, when will it stop. These magnificent mammals don’t have a voice, it’s up to us to help do what is possible to keep the population of polar bears healthy and strong. They are already battling a changing climate so let’s do our part now and save every last bear we can within our power.

Polar bears are always on the hunt for food. This is their natural behaviour. We can not just kill them because of human convenience

Please sign and share this petition to save this polar bear named Frost.

Thank you in advance,

JEANETTE FRASER

Urgent: Stop Baby Goslings from being KILLED by Cassata Org on Long Island!

On Wednesday, May 11, 2022, a resident of luxury apartment complex Victorian Gardens in Holtsville NY videotaped two men coralling mother geese and their babies before grabbing the babies by their wings and hauling them away. Authorities tell us they were likely killed. When the resident questioned the abductors about a permit and informed them she was calling the authorities, they allegedly laughed and called her a c*nt. They then collected the evidence and drove off with the goslings, leaving more behind.

While this witness surely saved the lives of several families at her apartment complex, at least seven babies are now missing and all remain in danger should these thugs return. Humane Long Island (formerly known as Long Island Orchestrating for Nature – LION) has reached out to Michele Cassata of the Cassata Organization who owns Victorian Gardens and at least six other luxury apartment complexes on Long Island, however, she has not returned any of our calls or emails.

Please join us in urging Ms. Cassata and the Cassata Organization to immediately end lethal roundups on their properties and to pursue only humane, nonlethal wildlife management techniques moving forward. Then call Cassata Org at 631-218-6440 and leave them a voicemail at one of their extensions.

You may also join us for a protest outside of Victorian Gardens at 2 Victorian Ct, Holtsville, NY 11742 on Thursday, May 19 at noon! https://www.facebook.com/events/3225448384403744

Chickens in cages: Students demand that Compass Group follow through on its animal welfare promises!

Compass Group is the foodservice provider for my school, Cal Poly Humboldt. Although Compass Group was one of the first companies to adopt the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC)–a set of animal welfare standards aimed at improving how chickens are raised for meat–Compass has done little to show customers how they actually plan to fulfill these promises. Additionally, Compass Group continues to support the cruel crating of mama pigs throughout multiple pregnancies. Compass Group needs to follow in the footsteps of the many businesses that have already made meaningful progress toward fulfilling and reporting on their own animal welfare commitments.

Circus animals: Stop Loomis Bros Circus from Abusing ElephantsCircus animals:

Elephants performing for Loomis Bros Circus are facing extreme abuse. Throughout various performances, elephants have been forced to work on slippery grounds, denied permittance to the bathroom, and threatened with bullhooks and electric prods.

Other animals are suffering at the hands of this notoriously cruel circus, too. Brian Franzen, who exhibits big cats at the Loomis Bros. Circus and Shrine circuses, has said he “sprays cayenne pepper in tigers’ eyes and noses when they refuse to obey (his) commands.”

Read more here.

Please urge Loomis Bros Circus to go animal-free!

Despite the mistreatment of animals in many circuses, state anti-cruelty laws do not always cover these animals. Find out the laws in your state here (scroll to section III sub-section B) and let your local government know that animal rights are our concern.

PETA’s mission statement:

Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.
